The WELL Project: Woodpark Edible Local Landscape
Growing local food in our own back yards

Frequently Asked Questions

I would like to plant a garden, but I’m not sure where to get started.
No problem.  We can help. There will be a series of workshops held every Thursday in March at the Carlingwood Branch of the Ottawa Public Library (281 Woodroffe Ave.) at 6:45PM. There will be 30-minute presentations with plenty of time for questions and answers. You will be able to learn about how to start, grow and harvest a garden.

You are also free to contact Tom Marcantonio, who is spearheading this project, as a starting point. He can be reached via email at tmarc@rogers.com or by phone at 613-820-4173.

Is there help available during the growing season?  I’m not super knowledgeable about pest control, weeding, etc.
Yes. As part of the project, a site drawing and work plan will be prepared for each new or rejuvenated garden. A maintenance and harvest plan will also be prepared.

My yard isn’t very big.  I’m not sure if I have enough space to grow any food.
You can grow a garden with just four square feet (2’X 2’) of yard space, or even just plant a small container.  It can be as small or large scale as you like, depending on your preferences and the amount of space you have available.

I don't have a yard.  How can I grow a garden?
We are working to make community garden and/or other shared spaces available (i.e. connecting people with land to those without).  If you would be interested in having space made available to you, please contact Tom Marcantonio via email at tmarc@rogers.com or by phone at 613-820-4173.

Are you accepting donations of gardening supplies for this project? I have a few things I would like to donate.
Absolutely! Things like soil, pots, gardening tools, extra seeds or seedlings, plant stakes, etc. can really help out. Please contact Tom Marcantonio via email at tmarc@rogers.com or by phone at 613-820-4173.

I live in Woodpark and am an avid gardener.  Can I help out?
Absolutely. The more help we get, the better this project will be. Please contact Tom Marcantonio via email at tmarc@rogers.com or by phone at 613-820-4173.

I've tried to grow a garden in the past, but the rabbits in my yard ate everything. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?
Some gardeners in Woodpark have never experienced problems with rabbits, while others find their garden to be a "bunny buffet" year after year. Placing chicken wire around your garden should do the trick. Just be sure to make it high enough so that rabbits cannot jump over it (about 3 feet). It can be attached to stakes around raised beds or garden area.

I am a high school student living in Woodpark. Can I volunteer for this initiative and have it go towards my high school volunteer hours? Are there opportunities for paid part-time employment?
Volunteering for this important project can help you gain valuable work experience. We are hoping to provide opportunities for volunteer credits and possibly paid part-time employment. We will be meeting with Woodroffe High School staff to discuss.
