The WELL Project: Woodpark Edible Local Landscape
Growing local food in our own back yards

W.E.L.L. Vegetable Growing Workshop Wrap-Up

On the evenings of four Thursdays in March, in the Carlingwood library meeting room, the community was invited to share their ideas, plans and knowledge about growing food. In all, 46 people attended to participate in lively discussions, information sharing and garden planning. That means close to 100 hours of individual people time was invested in the sessions.

The highlights of the workshops were the opening session when Robin Turner, owner of Roots and Shoots Organic Farm in Manotick spoke to a gropup of 16 people comparing industrial and local food systems – very enlightening. Robin will continue to help Ottawa improve access to tasty, nutritious food as president of the Ottawa (Landsdowne) Farmer’s Market. Then on the 3rd session a local wise, elder and Master tomato grower – Guiseppe (who lives and farms at the corner of Fairlawn and Lenester) shared with us his fascinating tomato growing secrets.

Now Spring is right around the corner and we can all turn our attention to planting those wonderful little seeds and nurturing them until we can hungrily devour them at their peak of juicy flavour and unsurpassed nutrition. If you can keep a journal of your efforts, activities, successes and failures, it will help get better harvests and more enjoyment in all future gardens.

Thanks to all those who attended and we will look forward to fall when we can get back together and share this years growing experiences and some of our harvests!

We will also look forward to increasing the impact of the WELL project in our community with more sessions next March in preparation for the 2012 growing season.

If any questions or needs arise don’t forget to check this website and send in your requests.

Good Growing and Happy Summer
