Woodpark Community Association Our WorkThe bulk of the work of the WCA can be divided into the following categories:
Traffic and Parking CommitteeThe Traffic and Parking Committee seeks to identify and resolve traffic and parking issues in the neighbourhood. Recent and ongoing work includes monitoring parking issues with car dealership employees, traffic surveys to evaluate speeding and non-local traffic in the neighbourhood and liaising with our ward councillor and Ottawa Police to have greater enforcement of illegal left turns on to Richmond Road. Your Traffic and Parking Committee members are Don Ford and John Blatherwick.
Hard ServicesThe Hard Services Committee monitors the infrastructure in the neighbourhood such as roads, sidewalks, street lighting and storm sewers. This committee has requested a sewer map for the neighbourhood and that a city sewer official attend one of our committee meetings. Your Hard Services Committee members are Kevin Baker and Greg Lavigne. Environment and Social CommitteeThe Environment and Social Committee organizes community social events and undertakes activities to promote a better physical environment within Woodpark. Recent work includes having a Spring BBQ and park cleanup, hosting a neighbourhood garage sale and working with the City for the play structure replacement. Do you have a suggestion for an event, activity or initiative in the neighbourhood? If so, we would love to hear from you! Your Environment and Social Committee members are Larry Ladell and Steve Hopwood. Gardening and Food Production2011 is the inaugural year for the Wood Park Edible Local Landscape (WELL) Project. This initiative will provide information and help to Woodpark residents wishing to grow some of their own food. Residents can grow food in their own yards, neighbours' yards, and work to create future shared garden spaces right here in our neighbourhood. Your Gardening and Food Production Coordinator is Tom Marcantonio. Community SecurityThe Community Security Committee focusses on neighbourhood safety and security. Past and ongoing work includes a safety audit and monitoring of the Ottawa Police reported crime reports. Your Community Security member is John Svab, who is well versed in community safety and security initiatives and can provide advice to the community association and neighbourhood residents. CommunicationsThe Communications Committee strives to keep Woodpark residents in the loop about neighbourhood events, initiatives issues and news. Recent and ongoing work include the redevelopment of this web site, creating the twice-yearly "Woodpark News" newsletter, and constructing new sandwich boards. We have also created an email distribution list for neighbourhood news. Your Communications Committee members are Erika Kaufman (Woodpark Website) and Tanya Krupilnicki (Woodpark Newsletter). Zoning and DevelopmentThe Zoning and Development Committee acts as a community resource for land use and development matters potentially affecting the Woodpark community. This committee reviews all zoning-related City of Ottawa documents forwarded to the WCA as part of the public notification process and flags any potential issues to the WCA and affected Woodpark residents. It also responds to development proposals and applications, attends any related meetings and hearings, and prepares and files appeals where zoning or variances are contested on behalf of the WCA and Woodpark residents. This committee seeks to balance the need for development with ensuring that the quality of life and character of the neighbourhood are protected. Your Zoning and Development Commitee Chair is John Blatherwick. The full Zoning and Development Committee is comprised by the WCA Board.
