Road SafetyRoad users in our neighbourhood must strike a balance between the needs of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Many Woodpark residents are concerned with the volume of traffic, speeding, and a lack of respect of stop signs in our neighbourhood and would like to feel safer travelling on our streets.
Reporting Unsafe Driving PracticesMany Woodpark residents are concerned with unsafe driving practices that seem to be becoming more commonplace in our neighbourhood. The Ottawa Police and the City of Ottawa have informed us that the best way to begin alleviating this problem is to consistently report traffic violations when they occur. The need for police and city resources to deal with these problems is gauged by the number of complaints made by neighbourhood residents. If you are concerned about things like running stop signs, speeding, illegal and wrong-way turns, etc., please be sure to report these unsafe driving practices by contacting the Ottawa Police Reporting Centre at 613-236-1222 ext 7300. Richmond Road/Wesboro Transportation Management Implementation PlanThe City of Ottawa has initiated the preparation of a Transportation Management Implementation Plan (TMIP) in the Richmond Road/Westboro area. The plan identifies transportation initiatives for the study area that are designed to reduce auto dependence and to increase transit use, carpooling, cycling, and walking. These initiatives are scheduled for implementation over the next 15 years.
Representatives from the Woodpark Community Association attended these open houses on the neighbourhood's behalf. Parking IssuesEmployees of Honda and Metro dealerships continue to park on Compton, Allison and New Orchard Avenues, despite assurances from the dealerships that they have ample employee parking. If residents are concerned about this, they are encouraged to contact 311 to ask that tickets be issued to people parking beyond the three-hour allowed time. Resident Proposes a "Bike Street" for WoodparkTom Trottier, a resident of Woodpark and a former president of Citizens for Safe Cycling would like to see Lawn Ave. designated as a "bike street" in Woodpark. He attended the community association's monthly meeting in May 2010 to give a presentation of his idea. Any traffic calming measures that are potentially sought will be done in consultation with the residents of the neighbourhood and with the City of Ottawa's Traffic Department. Traffic studies will also be completed to assess the need for such measures. We thank Tom very much for presenting his ideas and look forward to further discussion of ideas for making the streets in our neighbourhood safer for everyone. It's very important to strike a balance between the needs of residents, pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. Tom's ideas for a bike street are outlined in the presentation below.
If you have any questions for Tom about his idea for a bike street, please feel free to contact him.
