Road Safety

Road users in our neighbourhood must strike a balance between the needs of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. Many Woodpark residents are concerned with the volume of traffic, speeding, and a lack of respect of stop signs in our neighbourhood and would like to feel safer travelling on our streets.

Traffic Surveys

Many vehicles travel through Woodpark as a shortcut to avoid traffic and stop lights on the
surrounding major roads. This contributes to the large volume of traffic in our
neighbourhood and is of particular concern to pedestrians, residents with young children
and seniors.

An Origin and Destination traffic study will take place this Fall (September or October) to assess the level of non-local traffic using our neighbourhood as a thoroughfare. There will also be periodic radar gun surveys in the coming months to assess speeding in the neighbourhood.

The information from these traffic studies will be collected and used to consult with the City of Ottawa's Traffic Department in order to update the Woodpark Traffic Plan. This is a necessary first step to assess the need for traffic calming measures to reduce the amount of traffic in the neighbourhood.

Past measures include the 1975 Woodpark Traffic Plan and recent closure of Edgeworth Ave. at Richmond Rd. and partial closure of Ancaster Ave. at Carling Ave.

Volunteers Needed
If you are interested in volunteering for traffic surveys or if you have any questions, please contact John Blatherwick at or 613-829-2629. Your participation is greatly appreciated!

Parking Issues

Employees of Honda and Metro dealerships continue to park on Compton, Allison and New Orchard Avenues, despite assurances from the dealerships that they have ample employee parking. If residents are concerned about this, they are encouraged to contact 311 to ask that tickets be issued to people parking beyond the three-hour allowed time.

Resident Proposes a "Bike Street" for Woodpark

Tom Trottier, a resident of Woodpark and a former president of Citizens for Safe Cycling would like to see Lawn Ave. designated as a "bike street" in Woodpark. He attended the community association's monthly meeting in May 2010 to give a presentation of his idea.

Any traffic calming measures that are potentially sought will be done in consultation with the residents of the neighbourhood and with the City of Ottawa's Traffic Department. Traffic studies will also be completed to assess the need for such measures.

We thank Tom very much for presenting his ideas and look forward to further discussion of ideas for making the streets in our neighbourhood safer for everyone. It's very important to strike a balance between the needs of residents, pedestrians, motorists and cyclists.

Tom's ideas for a bike street are outlined in the presentation below.
