About Woodpark Common Ground Community Garden

Following many years of lobbying the Woodpark Community Association established a community garden in the neighbourhood. The Common Ground Community Garden broke ground in late June 2017, in Lincoln Fields to the west of Edgeworth Ave. This is a three-year pilot project on National Capital Commission property – the first community garden on urban NCC land. Its success will serve in part to determine if more community gardens will be founded on NCC property.

Although we began the season late due to a lengthy approval process, we had over a dozen garden plots rented to individuals and families dedicated mostly to vegetables. Tomatoes from one communal garden were donated to the Food Bank; a perennial flower garden was planted along the walking path to further enhance the area for both gardeners and passersby, and another communal perennial garden is dedicated to fruit and herbs.

The CGCG organizing committee is made up of seven Woodpark residents whose time is all given voluntarily. Many other members of the community donated plants, helped with the initial planting; weeded the garden, and helped with construction of: a garden accessible to wheelchair users, compost bins, and a shed.

Although a good part of our start-up funding comes from Just Food (, a community-based, not-for-profit organization, there are many expenses that it does not cover, so we fundraise for things like:  mowing the area, educational activities, tools, and further quantities of earth, mulch, and straw. Annual fees paid by gardeners also help cover these costs.
